Abscess Draining
A dental abscess is a pocket of pus that forms when an infection from a tooth or the gum spreads into the surrounding tissue. It causes throbbing pain, swelling of the gum or face, and sometimes fever. An abscess is an emergency: the infection can spread, and painkillers only mask it. Draining it relieves the pressure and the pain quickly.
How it's done
Under local anaesthetic, the surgeon makes a small incision over the abscess and lets the pus drain. A small drain may be left in place for a day or two. Antibiotics are prescribed when needed. This treats the immediate problem, but not its cause: the tooth that started the infection is then treated with root canal treatment, or extracted if it can't be saved.
