Cystectomy

A jaw cyst is a fluid-filled cavity that forms in the bone, most often at the tip of a tooth root after a long-standing infection, or around an impacted tooth. It can grow for years without pain while it slowly destroys bone. Cystectomy is the surgical removal of the cyst together with its lining, so that it can't come back and the bone can heal.

When it's needed

Many cysts are found by chance on an X-ray or a 3D scan. Signs that one has grown large include swelling of the jaw, pressure or dull pain, loosening of the nearby teeth, or a tooth that stays painful after root canal treatment. Once a cyst is diagnosed, it's removed: it won't heal on its own.

How it's done at M Clinic

The cyst is mapped on a 3D CBCT scan so the surgeon knows its exact size and its relation to the roots, the nerve and the sinus. Under local anaesthetic, the surgeon opens the bone over the cyst, removes it completely with its lining, treats or removes the tooth that caused it, and closes the gum with stitches. Larger cavities may be filled with bone material. The removed tissue can be sent for histological examination. Healing of the bone takes several months and is checked on follow-up scans.

Cystectomy is performed by maxillofacial surgeon Giorgi Rakviashvili and surgeon Nukri Rogava.

Price

The starting price for cystectomy is shown above. The final figure depends on the size and location of the cyst and is confirmed after the 3D scan.
