Fissure Sealing (Hermetization)
The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have deep grooves (fissures) where food and bacteria collect and a toothbrush can't reach. This is where decay most often starts in children. Fissure sealing fills these grooves with a protective material and keeps them clean.
How it's done
The procedure is quick and painless and needs no drilling or anaesthetic. The dentist cleans the tooth, applies a liquid sealant to the grooves and hardens it with a light. It's usually done on the permanent molars soon after they come through, around the age of 6 to 7 and again at 11 to 13.
