When the nerve of a child's tooth is badly inflamed or infected, root canal treatment can save the tooth. This applies both to baby teeth, which need to stay in place until the permanent teeth come through, and to young permanent teeth.

How it's done

Under local anaesthetic the dentist removes the infected nerve, cleans the canals and fills them with a material suited to the type of tooth, then restores the tooth with a filling. The dentist explains each step to the child and works calmly and gently.
