Extraction (Pediatric)

Sometimes a child's tooth has to be removed: when a baby tooth is too damaged to save, when it doesn't fall out on its own and blocks the permanent tooth, or for orthodontic reasons. The dentist always tries to save a baby tooth first, because it holds space for the permanent one.

How it's done

The extraction is done under local anaesthetic, gently and as quickly as possible. The dentist prepares the child for what will happen and gives the parents clear aftercare instructions. If a baby tooth is lost early, the dentist will advise whether a space maintainer is needed.
