Socket Preservation With Xenograft
When a tooth is extracted, the bone that held it starts to shrink straight away. If an implant is planned but can't be placed in the same visit, socket preservation keeps the bone in shape for it. The surgeon fills the empty socket with a bone substitute (a xenograft, bone material of animal origin that the body gradually replaces with its own bone) and covers it with a membrane.
Why it matters
Without preservation, the socket loses width and height over the following months, and the implant may then need a separate bone augmentation, which is a bigger procedure and a longer wait. Preserving the socket at the time of extraction is the simpler route.
How it's done at M Clinic
Socket preservation is done in the same visit as the extraction, under the same local anaesthetic. The tooth is removed as atraumatically as possible, the socket is cleaned, the graft material is placed and covered, and the gum is closed with stitches. The graft matures for several months, after which the implant is placed into solid bone. Whether you need socket preservation or can have the implant placed immediately is decided from your 3D CBCT scan.
The procedure is performed by maxillofacial surgeon Giorgi Rakviashvili and surgeon Nukri Rogava.
Price
Socket preservation with a xenograft costs from 1,550 GEL, in addition to the extraction. The implant is planned and priced separately. See our implant options.
