Sutures
Sutures (stitches) close the gum after a surgical procedure: an extraction of an impacted tooth, implant placement, bone augmentation, a sinus lift, or the removal of a cyst. They hold the edges of the gum together so that the wound heals cleanly and the blood clot or graft underneath stays protected.
What to expect
Depending on the procedure, the surgeon uses either resorbable sutures, which dissolve on their own within one to two weeks, or non-resorbable ones, which are removed at a follow-up visit after about 7 to 10 days. Removal takes a few minutes and doesn't need anaesthetic. Keep the area clean, rinse gently as instructed, and avoid pulling at the stitches with your tongue or toothbrush.
