Treatment of Gingival Recession

Gingival recession is when the gum pulls back and exposes the root of the tooth. The tooth looks longer, the exposed root becomes sensitive to cold, and it's more prone to decay. Common causes are brushing too hard, gum disease, a thin gum type and orthodontic movement.

How it's treated

The periodontist first finds and removes the cause. Then, in a short surgical procedure under local anaesthetic, the exposed root is covered with gum tissue so the gum line is restored. This protects the root, reduces sensitivity and improves the look of the smile. The exact technique is chosen at the consultation, depending on the depth and number of recessions.
