Zirconia Crowns

A zirconia crown restores a tooth that is badly damaged or broken. The crown covers the whole tooth and gives back its shape, function and colour. Zirconia is a biocompatible, metal-free material that is as strong as metal-based crowns but looks like a natural tooth: no dark line ever appears at the gum.

When you need a crown

A crown is needed when a tooth is so damaged by decay that a filling won't hold, when it's broken or cracked, when it needs protection after root canal treatment, when it sits on a dental implant, or for aesthetic reasons, to change its colour and shape.

Questions patients ask

How many visits does it take? Usually two: at the first the tooth is prepared and scanned, at the second the finished crown is fitted. In between you wear a temporary crown.

How long does a zirconia crown last? Fifteen years or more with proper hygiene. Zirconia doesn't stain and wears no more than a natural tooth.

Zirconia or metal-ceramic? Zirconia is far more aesthetic and biocompatible, leaves no dark line at the gum and doesn't cause allergies. Metal-ceramic is cheaper but looks noticeably less natural.
