Periodontal hygiene is a professional cleaning for patients with gum disease or a tendency to it. Unlike a standard cleaning, the hygienist works deeper, removing plaque and tartar from the gum pockets around the teeth, where inflammation starts.

Who needs it

It's recommended if your gums bleed, if you have periodontitis or have been treated for it, or if the dentist has found deep gum pockets. Regular periodontal hygiene keeps the inflammation under control and helps keep your teeth for longer. How often you need it is set by the periodontist, usually every three to six months.
