Periodontitis is inflammation of the tissues that hold the tooth in place. It starts with bleeding gums and bad breath and, if left untreated, destroys the bone around the teeth: the gums recede, deep pockets form, and the teeth gradually loosen and can be lost. Periodontitis is one of the main reasons adults lose teeth.

How it's treated at M Clinic

The periodontist measures the depth of the gum pockets and assesses the bone, if needed on a 3D X-ray. Under local anaesthetic, plaque and tartar are removed from the pockets and the root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed so the gum can heal and reattach. After treatment you'll need regular periodontal hygiene and careful home care to keep the result.
